Drink plenty of water
While it goes without saying, we may forget to prioritise plain water instead of our chilled, sweet canned drinks on a daily basis. If you didn't know, keeping hydrated by drinking water maintains your skin's elasticity, which also reduces wrinkles and blemishes.
We cannot stress how important it is to hydrate yourselves from the inside. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day is a vital first step to achieving your dream, glowy skin for your important day.
So grab that glass of water, NOW!
Eat fruits
The next time you feel like snacking, instead of chips, grab these yummy fruits instead. - blueberries, guava, kiwi fruits, oranges, and papaya.
The fruits hydrate you and consist of vitamin C, a vitamin that we all swear by. Why? It helps to produce collagen, which gives you a glowy, radiant and youthful look to your skin. What's there not to love about it?
Mask regularly
We've shared about it before, but it just cannot be emphasized enough. Masking daily is definitely the ideal.
However, if you are time-strapped, fret not, follow this simple 2-4-7 rule to help prepare yourselves for your big day.
Mask 2X a week, 3 months before your wedding day.
Mask 4X times a week, 2 months before your wedding day.
Mask every day, 1 month before your wedding day.
Our sensitive skin ladies who are worried about masking, we've got you covered. We have put together a list of tried and tested masks that are suitable for sensitive skin. Read all about it here.
Exfoliate regularly
Exfoliating is a quintessential step to unclog pores and prevent acne. We have tried and tested a myriad of exfoliants that are best for sensitive skin, and we are here to share how to do it the right way!
Do note: Although exfoliation is an important step that you should not miss in your skincare routine, exfoliation for sensitive skin should not be overly done.
Generally, exfoliating 3 to 4 times weekly is healthy. But if you are new to exfoliating, it’s better to start mild so you do not over-exfoliate.
Start by exfoliating once a week, and if it works for you, move on to 2 to 3 times a week, and then 3 to 4 times a week, and so on.
(Our principal artist, Claire exfoliates daily while some of our clients can only exfoliate 2-3x a week. So it’s important to listen to what your skin needs, and no one will know that better than you!)
Look for mild chemical exfoliates such as Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). It is important to stay away from physical exfoliants for those with sensitive skin.
AHAs are water-soluble, naturally removing the outer dead portion of the skin. (Eg: glycolic, and lactic acids).
Our favourites are the Paula's choice's Glycolic Acid, Pixi's Glow Tonic, and Kale-Lalu-yAHA (Resurfacing AHA exfoliator).
BHAs include beta hydroxyl and salicylic acid. These are oil soluble and better for those who often experience acne on their skin or need a good declog.
Those with sensitive skin can go for COSRX;s One Step Original Clear Pad and Benton's Aloe Skin Toner. These products contain different forms of BHAs that help to gently extract impurities to give you clear, healthy skin.
If both AHAs and BHAs do not work for you, try enzymes. Enzymes are gentle yet potent, suitable for all skin types. Enzymes work best at body temperature, so take note not to use them under steam.
The Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx™ Exfoliating Peel Gel is safe for those with sensitive skin and acne. It acts as a peeling gel that visibly rolls, lifts and sweeps away impurities when massaged onto the skin, and it helps with acne scarring too.
Putting on sunscreen is extremely important, especially after you have exfoliated. Depending on the intensity of your exfoliation, your skin remains sensitive to the harmful UV rays for a few days after exfoliating.
Furthermore, on a daily basis, applying sunscreen is best for anti-aging as you not only get exposed from the sun's harmful rays, but also to blue light from your computer or phone screens!
Facial
Refrain from getting a facial done a week before your big day, and have your facial a month ahead instead. Your skin might not heal entirely after the extraction done during your facial, causing it to be more sensitised than usual. That will not be ideal for your makeover if you want a flawless finish.
However, it is important to note that those who have never had a facial before to skip this. Your skin might be overly stimulated if you go to a facial when you usually do not, and this can cause unexpected results that may need time to recover from!
Plenty of Sleep
We know, we know. Your busy schedule keeps you up till night and an early morning would mean more time on your hands. The recommended amount of sleep is 7 to 9 hours per night. Try to plan your time wisely, and prioritise quality sleep, trust us, your eyes will definitely thank you later.
Moisturise Regularly
Moisturising throughout the day is just as important as the initial day cream application.
For our busy bees, prepare a skin mist in your bag to give your face a spritz of moisture whenever it feels dry, or after a long day at your air-conditioned office.
We recommend Eau Thermale AVENE's Thermal Spring Water Mist, D'ALBA's White Truffle First Spray Serum and the La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water.
As for the moisturizers in your skincare regime, make sure they are either gel-type or lightweight. A moisturizer that is too rich for your skin type, especially for sensitive skin, can cause adverse effects and potentially break you out.
Some lightweight and gentle creams we love are Tatcha's The Water Cream and Bioderma's Hydrabio Moisturising Cream.
As you can see, achieving perfect glowing skin is not a one-time miracle, and requires discipline. Once you have a goal in mind, nobody can stop you but yourself. We hope to see all our naturally glowing and beautiful brides on your makeover day, so we can enhance it further with makeup. What are you waiting for?
